5 Healthy Alternatives for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween is almost here and the sugar indulgence is in full swing! It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of the seasonal candy, especially when it comes to Trick-or-Treating. Whether you’re going house to house with your kids or passing out candy yourself, it is always fun to see the creative costumes of the neighborhood little ones.

Unfortunately, that one night of fun results in pounds and pounds of chocolate and candies being consumed by not only the children but also ourselves. No one needs as much candy as we get on Halloween. Although Trick or Treating is a fun tradition, it is not a healthy one.

You can consider other fruit, too; just make sure it has a peel to keep treats sanitary and parents happy.

2. Nut Snack Packs
Lightly salted nuts will be a welcome relief from the overwhelming sweetness of candy. Nuts can be a protein-rich snack. Just make sure you select packs of an appropriate serving size.

3. Glow Sticks
Glow sticks are sure to delight children. They’re fun and practical! Children will enjoy the immediate gratification of using them as they trick or treat, and parents will appreciate how it makes it easier to keep track of their children in the darkness. No one will even wonder what happened to the sweets.

4. Gum
Sugar-free gum won’t add tons of calories and sugar to children’s bags, and it can even help mitigate the effects of the other candy they receive. After all, children who are occupied with chewing gum won’t be eating more candy. It also can help clean their teeth after they inhale sugary treats. These have all the fun of stickers (another good idea), but they’ll last longer and won’t fall off and get adhesive ground into the carpet.
